How to use Pylot

Step 1

Put on Pylot to automatically start recording your work session.

Step 2

Get Flow and Fatigue feedback accompanied by a recommendation for deep work, shallow tasks, or a break.

Simplified graph view for your best deep work time

Step 3

Plan your deep work around periods of peak mental energy.

A sprinkle of science

How it works

Pylot uses EEG to measure brain wave activity and a PPG sensor to measure heart rate variability (HRV). This data is then used to track your Flow and Mental Fatigue.

Flow

The relaxed state of concentration when you perform at your best. Associated with increased alpha brain wave activity from EEG.

The relaxed state of concentration where you perform at your best. Associated with increased brain wave activity, as measured with EEG.

Fatigue

Sustained cognitive load results in fatigue and reduced performance. Pylot uses both EEG and HRV data to measure mental fatigue.

The apps

The Pylot app is available on Mac and Windows. Both apps have all the features outlined on this page, with more improvements and features being added monthly.

Identify optimal work times

Pylot uses EEG and HRV sensors to track Flow and Mental Fatigue, pinpointing your best times for deep work.

Did somebody say science?

The first tracker to measure brain activity & heart rate variability (HRV) to help you understand your mental fatigue & flow.

Explore the science in detail

The science

Studies show that mental fatigue can lead to decreased cognitive performance, increased errors, and reduced work output, contributing to more workplace accidents. On the flip side, individuals in a 'flow' state, demonstrate improved work efficiency, enhanced cognitive performance, and even better exam results. Importantly, this 'flow' state is beneficial not just for individuals but also for teams. Moreover, people experiencing regular flow report higher job satisfaction.

Brain activity

When you think and process information, your brain creates small electrical signals that can be measured by an EEG sensor on the surface of your head. This provides insights into how focused, relaxed or intensely you are concentrating. EEG is completely safe. It does not send any signals to your brain. It simply detects the activity your brain is creating.

Heart rate variability

A measure of the small changes in time between each heartbeat. It's not about how fast or slow your heart beats but about the natural variations in the intervals between those beats. Less variation indicates you are more fatigued or stressed. Pylot measures HRV using an optical sensor on your forehead. This is similar to the optical sensor in a smartwatch.

Flow

Also known as "being in the zone," flow is the feeling you get when you're completely absorbed and focused on your work. This state is associated with high alpha brain wave activity and leads to you achieving your best work.

The relaxed state of concentration where you perform at your best. Associated with increased brain wave activity, as measured with EEG.

Fatigue

Extended periods of intense concentration can result in cognitive fatigue. This makes it harder to focus, and the quality of your work deteriorates. This is associated with a change in brain wave activity and reduced heart rate variability.

Sustained cognitive load results in fatigue and reduced performance. Pylot uses both EEG and HRV data to measure mental fatigue.

It all starts with an idea

The idea for Pylot came when the founders used to spend all morning in meetings at their previous job, then struggle to achieve deep work in the afternoon.
